Chana dal (also known as gram dal or split Bengal gram) is a popular Indian dal made from black chickpeas, an Indian variety of chickpea, which are hulled and split. In both its uncooked and cooked state chana dal is a rich yellow-orange in colour. The have a slightly sweet nutty smell and firm texture for cooking with. They can be used in traditional Indian dishes such as spiced dal curry or as a replacement for other dried legumes, such as in ham and pea soup.
These need to be soaked for at least an hour prior to cooking.
